Movements of nuclear material are subject to stringent regulations and can only take place if in compliance with all applicable legislation. The specialist defence sites involved in delivering our nuclear weapons programme are based at Clyde, at Coulport and at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Berkshire. As such, it is necessary to transport nuclear defence material, including warheads, between those sites, although the movement of such material is kept to the minimum necessary to meet operational requirements in support of the UK's strategic deterrent programme.
The safety of the general public and the security of nuclear weapons convoys is paramount during the transportation of defence material. All appropriate measures are taken to ensure that such weapon convoys can operate safely.
