As Mr Amro has a long history working in the human rights arena, the treatment of Mr Amro is of great concern to many UK citizens and our values as a country. I understand that the charges brought against Mr Amro cumulatively could lead to imprisonment for up to three years.
As an MP always working to progress human rights in the UK, I find Mr Amro’s dedication to advancing human rights in his own country admirable. I am further impressed in knowing that he was named Human Rights Defender of the Year for Palestine by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2010, and he was recognised as a human rights defender by the EU in 2013.
While I recognise that it is not for the UK Government to intervene in the justice system of another sovereign state, I am in full support of the Government’s firm commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in Israel and in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, as well as compliance with international humanitarian law.
I am further reassured in knowing that the UK Government regularly discusses those obligations with the Israeli authorities, and I can assure you that the UK Government is following this case closely, including sending representatives from the UK embassy to the trial.
