I appreciate there is concern over this important issue. Let me say that I do not think it is extremist to oppose same-sex marriage, and having looked into the matter you have raised, I am pleased that the Government's counter-extremism work is emphatically not intended to cover legitimate debate on such issues. As a member of the Women and Equalities Select Committee, I believe that it is important for people to have equality for all, provided that people are respectful and considerate of others.
In fact, I am encouraged to note that the Government's forthcoming counter-extremism strategy will protect fundamental values including freedom of speech. I believe that the Government has a duty to stand up and challenge these extremists - we need to protect people and the values we live by. I am pleased to learn that the Government's approach to tackling extremism is predicated on protecting freedom of speech and the right to practice a faith. These are two of the core values underpinning British society that extremists wish to undermine.
The Counter-Extremism Bill will introduce measures focused specifically on dealing with the most active and persistent extremist groups and individuals who promote hatred and stir up divisions within a community, and which pose a serious threat to society. There will be strong safeguards so that the powers are only used where it is clearly in the public interest and approved by a court.
