I share the concerns of many constituents about the increase in the number of people displaced from their homes. Meeting the needs of refugees and other forcibly displaced people is at the centre of the UK's humanitarian work.
The Department for International Development provides assistance to refugees and internally displaced people in many of the world's major crises. One of the agencies receiving support is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which works in over 120 countries to help displaced people, including: Syria, Kenya, South Sudan and Afghanistan. This assistance helps to meet basic needs and helps displaced people rebuild their lives until they can return, or integrate in a new country. In 2013-14, the UNHCR received £98 million in UK funding.
The UK has committed £800 million for humanitarian assistance in response to the Syria crisis, of which approximately £378 million has been allocated to partners providing humanitarian assistance inside Syria, and £422 million to support refugees and host communities in neighbouring countries. This is the UK's largest ever response to a humanitarian crisis and has provided monthly food rations for 8.7 million people in Syria and neighbouring countries between February 2013 and September 2014.
The incoming Government will continue to support refugees and internally displaced people worldwide.
