I fully applaud the fantastic work done by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on body image, and agree that effective change will only be achieved by cooperation and collaboration. As a member of the Women’s and qualities Select Committee, I recognise that this is a significant problem not only to women but to men as well.
I have had assurances from Ministers that they have met with the British Fashion Council and the campaign group behind "All Walks Beyond the Catwalk" to discuss how a change for good can be brought about for those who are in the fashion industry, those who aspire to it, and most importantly, those who are influenced by it.
The Government is committed to encouraging body confidence, by promoting young people's media literacy and resilience, supporting good practice in the industry and raising awareness. For example, in March the Government started work with teachers' representatives to publish guidance on teaching about body image.
In addition, the Government is investing in community services for eating disorders in order for young people to receive more effective help faster and closer to home. At the same time, the Government recognises the negative impact that body image issues can have on mental health, and therefore has committed £450m to improve access to psychological therapies, including depression, for adults, children and young people.
